Industry Application Examples

Tom Sawyer Perspectives can be applied to display data in a wide variety of industry settings. Here are a few examples of applications.

• Data Management
  A database design application displays entity-relationship diagrams. The views graphically depict the structure of tables and columns in schemas, including primary and foreign key relationships. Designers can easily assess the structure of the database and suggest changes.

• Enterprise Business
  A project management application tracks the progress of business processes within an organization. A number of views are available to highlight different aspects of projects. The drawing view graphically shows task dependencies, milestones, and potential problem areas. Processes can be edited directly from the drawing view. In this example, each rectangle in the drawing represents a task assigned to a person. Dependencies between tasks are shown as lines connecting the rectangles. A horizontal bar at the bottom of each rectangle indicates percent completion of each task.

• Genealogy
  A genealogy application portrays the family tree of President John Adams. Blue nodes represent males, pink nodes represent females, and different line styles represent types of relationships between family members. Users can search the family tree for any combination of letters, and the results are highlighted yellow in the drawing view. Users may also select a node for a particular person in the drawing view and see details about that person in the inspector view.

• Life Sciences
  A molecular cell modeling visualization application links data about molecules and cellular processes to a drawing view. Gene expression profiles are mapped on gene networks using different colors, enabling biologists to identify regions of the networks that are significantly expressed and suggest possible chains of causation. Users can graphically visualize biological entities and their relationships, dramatically improving their ability to formulate, compare, modify, manage, and test theories of cellular functions.

• Networking
  A network visualization application displays LAN and WAN topology views. The drawing view graphically shows the structure of the network and highlights devices or connections that are down or overloaded. Users can select devices and connections in the drawing view or the tree view and review the device characteristics in the inspector view.

• Web Crawling
  A web search application lays out the structure of a web site hierarchically in a drawing view. The search is set to start at a home page and branch outward to expose newly discovered web pages. Custom actions define settings, such as when to start, stop, and pause the search, as well as how often to search for new pages and update the drawing view. Users can crawl any website and discover hidden relationships or increase awareness of the website structure, or find broken links on a web page.
