Tom Sawyer Software Announces Full Support For The Next Release of The Java Development Kit

JDKTM 1.2 Provides the Foundation for Graph Layout and Diagramming Products

Berkeley, CA, December 8, 1998—Tom Sawyer Software, the leading vendor of graph layout products, today announced full support for the next release of Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s JavaTM Development Kit (JDKTM version 1.2). This release of the JDK provides a rich feature set of new class libraries and tools, which enabled Tom Sawyer Software's developers to build the Graph Editor Toolkit for Java quickly and efficiently. The Graph Editor Toolkit for Java is embedded by developers to help build high-performance, web-based enterprise class diagramming applications, such as those required for network topology visualization, electronic commerce, supply chain management, and web self-service and customer support applications. Sun's announcement of the availability of the next version of the JDK was made today during the JavaTM Business Expo in New York.

The Graph Editor Toolkit for Java takes advantage of the latest Java technology in JDK 1.2, including extensive use of Swing and the Graphics2D classes. With this built-in functionality, users of the Graph Editor Toolkit for Java can create and manage large, complex diagrams. JDK 1.2's refined security for Java applets and RMI and CORBA support are utilized. The Graph Editor Toolkit for Java is part of a family of products that provide graph management, diagram editing and scalable automatic graph layout in Unix, Microsoft Windows, and other cross-platform Java environments.

"We chose to use JDK 1.2 in our Graph Editor Toolkit for Java because of its new classes for graphics and distributed computing," said Brendan Madden, Chief Executive Officer of Tom Sawyer Software. "JDK 1.2 enables us to deliver our scalable graph layout and diagramming product to the Java developer community. With this release, Sun continues to provide a platform-independent architecture for developing and deploying enterprise solutions."

"Tom Sawyer Software's use of JDK 1.2 in their Graph Editor Toolkit demonstrates the real business value that the Java platform holds for the enterprise," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of the Java platform at Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s Java Software. "We value Tom Sawyer Software's commitment to the Java platform and are pleased to see Java technology used in their graph editing and graph layout products."

The increased use of the Internet and web-based information systems has increased the need for enterprise systems that display graphs through diagrammatic interfaces to depict complex information. The Graph Editor Toolkit for Java is used to build applications that automatically produce clear, well-ordered user interfaces. Thousands of objects and their relationships are automatically displayed.
