Tom Sawyer Software Releases Graph Layout Toolkit 2.4

Latest Version of the Toolkit Offers Increased Functionality

Berkeley, CA, July 15, 1997—Tom Sawyer Software today announced the release of the Graph Layout Toolkit version 2.4. The Graph Layout Toolkit is a suite of portable object-positioning libraries designed for integration into visualization applications. Automatic graph layout allows a developer to represent objects (nodes) and their connections (edges) logically in order to view underlying relationships within complex data sets.

"Increasingly, the visual components of data modeling applications are becoming crucial as tool vendors seek to establish a profile for their products," said Ugur Dogrusoz, product manager of the Graph Layout Toolkit. "Virtually any application with dynamic and complicated relationships will benefit tremendously from the component technology that the Graph Layout Toolkit provides."

The Graph Layout Toolkit's portable object positioning libraries create easily understandable graph drawings by choosing logical (x, y) positions for nodes and a suitable routing for edges. A family of four layout libraries is provided within the Graph Layout Toolkit: Circular, Hierarchical, Orthogonal and Symmetric. From these libraries, the developer can choose the layout library that best renders the relationships.

Version 2.4 of the Graph Layout Toolkit adds significant functionality to its already refined layout libraries. This new functionality includes channel merging in the Hierarchical Library for diagramming and charting applications, new clustering techniques in the Circular Library for LAN and WAN applications, and more compact orthogonal layout for database schema and CASE applications. In addition, the Graph Layout Toolkit's edge label positioning algorithms have been extended to support automatic positioning of several labels for each edge. A new incremental layout algorithm for positioning disconnected nodes, an essential component in incremental layout of graphs, has been introduced. Improved performance has been achieved through the reduction of memory usage when drawing large graphs.
