Graph Layout Toolkit for C++, Version 5.0, Sets New Performance and Scalability Standards

Oakland, CA, March 15, 2002—Tom Sawyer Software today announced that it has broken longstanding speed and scalability barriers with its latest software release. The software produces diagrams of data associations and interactions in applications such as genetic analysis, network status reporting, and crime scenario investigation.

Tom Sawyer Software's new Graph Layout Toolkit for C++, Version 5.0, can process thousands of nodes and edges in seconds instead of hours on ordinary desktop and laptop computers. Dozens of large data sets can be processed in the time it previously took for one set, and symmetric-style diagrams can be produced almost simultaneously with the updates of databases they illustrate.

Tom Sawyer Software libraries can speed to market new classes of applications that almost instantly display associations hidden in data such as dynamic network structures. Other innovations make diagrams easier to understand. They include greatly improved labeling performance, better node placement and grouping, more straight-line paths, and link lengths that reflect magnitude.

Biotechnology firms can use this software to pre-store hundreds or thousands of freshly updated visual layouts for instant retrieval. These layouts reveal molecular and genetic interactions that are otherwise hidden.

Software engineers can visualize structures in large scale projects during the development process. They avoid errors by immediately seeing the full impact of even small changes. They identify interactions and relationships more easily, increasing productivity.

The Graph Layout Toolkit offers several libraries of layout styles to emphasize data relationships in a broad range of ways. The symmetric layout library is often preferred for bioinformatics, enterprise networking, web visualization, and other applications with complex structures where clarity is critical. In addition to its unsurpassed speed, the symmetric library lays out large groups of nodes more efficiently and optimizes for either exposition or compactness with an option to suppress node overlap.

Two additional symmetric library features provide improved ways to portray relational structures. Node locations can be fixed across disconnected components so that their positions can show their relationships. Also, edge (link, or connecting line) lengths can be preset to indicate their strengths or to manipulate the locations of connected nodes. One application of this feature is to reveal strong and weak gene interactions.

The hierarchical layout library, popular in CRM, workflow, e-commerce and many other applications, lays out faster than before and boasts node placement that produces more straight line paths for better visibility.

Extensively labeled diagrams can now be produced far more quickly for all layout styles. Annotation is more clear and complete than ever and has greatly reduced memory requirements. Labeling speed is dramatically increased and position specification is simplified. For example, multiple labels can annotate an edge in positions such as source/target, left/right/center and above/below.

Nested drawings are now integrated within all layout styles due to a new placement algorithm that clearly shows how objects connect across nesting levels and across disconnected components.

Information models of unprecedented size can be visualized with a variety of existing complexity management techniques so that they are easy to comprehend. Diagrams are readily compressed by multi-level group nesting, and section folding and hiding. Complex relationships are more evident with links among diagrams and across web pages. The incremental layout feature maintains familiar structures after editing.

All of these capabilities are available now in Tom Sawyer Software's Graph Layout Toolkit for C++, Version 5.0. This component technology is incorporated into hundreds of applications by companies worldwide.
