Tom Sawyer Software Nationally Recognized for Graph Layout Technology Advances

Advanced Technology Program Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology

Berkeley, CA, December 14, 1998—Tom Sawyer Software, the leading vendor of graph layout products, today announced the successful fulfillment of an Advanced Technology Program (ATP) Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Tom Sawyer Software was selected because of its leadership in developing the fastest, most scalable, incremental graph layout algorithms available. These graph layout algorithms are sold as software components in the Graph Layout Toolkit and Graph Editor Toolkit. Both automatically produce clear, well-ordered user interfaces that can display thousands of objects and relationships between them.

Growth in the use of the Internet and web-based information systems has increased the need for enterprise systems that use graphs or diagrammatic interfaces to depict complex information. Tom Sawyer Software's products enable users to quickly see problem areas, validate designs, identify high-risk areas and document results. Current customer applications include enterprise resource planning, Year 2000 software analysis, network management, logistics, workflow management, and financial risk analysis.

"We were very pleased at the ATP to provide the cost-sharing support to Tom Sawyer Software to enable their innovative research into improved graph algorithms," said ATP director Dr. Lura Powell. "The incorporation of their results in software components that can be incorporated into the products of many other companies provides the potential for the significant economic benefits that the ATP was established to foster."

"This Advanced Technology Program Award is national recognition of Tom Sawyer Software's pioneering efforts towards scalable, incremental graph layout component solutions," said Brendan P. Madden, chief executive officer of Tom Sawyer Software. "We're very grateful that NIST understood that there were significant technical barriers preventing the adoption of advanced relationship visualization interfaces. With this project, we have successfully tackled the performance problems of large graphs, the incremental layout of graphs that change with time, and graphs that have complex constraint specifications. We're the only company that has been successful with such development."

The Graph Layout Toolkit is available in C, C++, ActiveX, and Java versions. The Graph Editor Toolkit is available in MFC, ActiveX and Java versions. This comprehensive platform coverage allows developers to deploy graph layout and graph management applications in Unix, Microsoft Windows and with new cross-platform Web environments.

About Tom Sawyer Software

Tom Sawyer Software is the leading provider of software and services that enable organizations to build highly scalable and flexible graph and data visualization and analysis applications. These applications are used to discover hidden patterns, complex relationships, and key trends in large and diverse datasets. Tom Sawyer Software serves clients with needs in link analysis; network topology; architectures and models; schematics and maps; and dependencies, flows, and processes. We help clients federate and integrate their data from multiple sources and build the graph and data visualization applications that are critical to analyzing and gaining insight into their data.
