Tom Sawyer Software Releases Graph Editor Toolkit 2.3

Developers Can Now Efficiently Develop Diagram Visualization Applications

Berkeley, CA, March 31, 1997—Tom Sawyer Software, a leading supplier of graph layout software, announces the release of the Graph Editor Toolkit version 2.3. The Graph Editor Toolkit is a graph display and editing component that application developers can use to quickly add a sophisticated diagramming layer to their applications. Graphical User Interface (GUI) application programmers now have improved access to Tom Sawyer Software's renowned layout technology.

A wide range of applications, in industries such as CASE, network management, and reengineering, use diagrams to visualize complex sets of information. Few existing diagramming tools match the automated layout features and sophisticated graph manipulation capabilities included with the Graph Editor Toolkit. A customizable interface is provided as part of the toolkit to ease the integration of its layout and diagramming features into the application domain. The Graph Editor Toolkit's high quality automated layout system is very appealing to vendors because it enhances the usability of their products.

The Graph Editor Toolkit is both powerful and extensible. Nowhere else on the market will developers find such impressive layout technology and be able to bundle it with their applications with such ease. The toolkit now makes it realistic for an application developer to produce the GUI diagramming application layer code in a matter of weeks. Many functions that are otherwise difficult to implement are provided with the class library. Double-buffered drawing, zooming, and dragging are just some of these features. "The Graph Editor Toolkit has the potential to revolutionize the way we look at diagram-driven applications," states Michael Doorley, product manager of the Graph Editor Toolkit product family.

The Graph Editor Toolkit provides solutions for the GUI features common across application domains. Developers can tailor the application layer by adding menus, icons, and toolbars. The toolkit also takes into consideration that each industry has its own drawing conventions, such as node icons, fonts, and line styles, and provides extensive sample code to show how the conventions of a particular drawing style can be supported.

The Graph Editor Toolkit utilizes the graph model, drawing model and layout technology of the Graph Layout Toolkit, Tom Sawyer Software's flagship product. The Graph Layout Toolkit, first developed in 1991, makes graphs more readable by providing a suite of layout algorithms each tailored to specific industries. The Graph Layout Toolkit enables the developer to model application data as a graph and automatically produces high quality drawings. The Graph Editor Toolkit now bridges the gap between layout technology and GUI development. "There is no other graph editing product that has this level of layout automation or scalability," said Brendan Madden, President and CEO of Tom Sawyer Software.

The initial release of the Graph Editor Toolkit supports Borland International's ObjectWindows Library. Tom Sawyer Software intends to extend this line of quality editor toolkits including support for Microsoft's Visual C++ and MFC slated for release in the summer of 1997.
